Personal day policy: what it is, why offer it, and how to set it up
What a personal day is, why companies give them, what federal law says, and how to set up a personal day policy in StartEase block by block, with screenshots.
What is a personal day policy?
A personal day is a paid day off for anything personal, with no reason needed: moving house, a school event, a long appointment.
Why companies offer it
- People handle life without using vacation.
- No questions to ask and no notes to check.
- Approving automatically saves the Employer time.
What the law says, in short
Federal law does not require paid personal leave. The U.S. Department of Labor says the FLSA does not require payment for time not worked, such as personal leave; it is a matter of agreement between employer and employee.

- Under Add a policy, choose Personal day, then select Add policy.

Common questions
Do employees need to give a reason?
No. That is the point of a personal day. The note box is optional.
Personal day or PTO?
If you already give a PTO bank that covers anything, you may not need personal days. They suit companies with separate vacation and sick policies.
Federal law does not require paid personal leave. The U.S. Department of Labor says the FLSA does not require payment for time not worked, such as personal leave; it is a matter of agreement between employer and employee.
